When You Can’t Be Muslim
- If someone or a group of people forces you to be Muslim, you cannot be Muslim.
You cannot be a Muslim if you are forced to convert, even if you outwardly accept Islam. In Islam, personal intention and desire are most important. Worship is not acceptable if it is not done with intention, and becoming a Muslim is not acceptable if it is not your desire. This is why when Muslims were conquering new lands, they did not force people to convert to Islam, unlike other religions. Instead, people were free to convert to Islam or pay a tax.
→ In the rules of Islam, only non-Muslims who live under Muslim rule are required to pay a tax. Wealthy Muslims pay a different tax called zakat.
Why is it not permissible to force someone to convert to Islam?
→ There are several reasons why forcing someone to convert to Islam is not valid. First, it violates the principle of free will. Islam is a religion of choice, and no one should be forced to convert against their will. Second, it is unlikely that someone who is forced to convert will sincerely believe in Islam. Third, it can lead to resentment and conflict.
In Qur’an Allah says
لاَ إِكْرَاهَ فِى الدِّينِ
“There is no compulsion in religion), meaning, “Do not force anyone to become Muslim”
وَقُلِ الْحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّكُمْ ۖ فَمَن شَاءَ فَلْيُؤْمِن وَمَن شَاءَ فَلْيَكْفُرْ
And say “The truth is from your Lord.” Then whosoever wills, let him believe; and whosoever wills, let him disbelieve”
2. If you say the Shahada (the Muslim declaration of faith) without understanding its meaning or without wanting to be Muslim, you cannot be Muslim.
The Shahada is the Muslim declaration of faith. It consists of two parts: “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”
The Shahada is the statement that makes someone a Muslim if they say it with the intention to convert to Islam. Saying the Shahada without wanting to convert to Islam or without understanding its meaning does not make you a Muslim, because Islam is only for those who desire it.
3. If a Muslim person makes you say Arabic words like Allahu Akbar, the Shahada, or other similar phrases, it does not mean that you have converted to Islam
I have seen Muslims joking with their non-Muslim friends like this on social media, and the non-Muslim friend has become nervous thinking that they have converted to Islam. It is inappropriate for Muslims to joke about conversion to Islam Because That is a lie and lying is haram in all cases, but This person may just be joking with you. It is a bad joke, I know.
Conclusion
Islam is a religion of peace and free will. No one can be forced to convert to Islam, Islam is a religion of choice. You cannot be forced to become Muslim, and your conversion is not valid unless it is done sincerely and with your own free will, even if you say that you accept Islam under duress, your conversion will not be valid. If you are considering converting to Islam, please do your research and learn about the religion. Make sure that you are converting to Islam because you sincerely believe in its teachings.
